I don’t live in one but my cousin does. It is a single housing sub divion with a community center, gym. pool. They love it, have great neighbors. I have not heard them say anything bad about it.
My wife and I live in an apartment for 55 plusser’s. Its quiet, relatively speaking, the neighbors are friendly and interesting, there are no wild all weekend long parties or kids screaming and fighting. So, yes we like living here. There are other apartment buildings close by that are open to the general public, so we don’t miss out on the fun of watching police cars visiting those various apartment buildings, or watching some young fellow test his car/truck out on that one block stretch from his apartment to the stop sign at the first street intersection.
I think it depends on the kind of person you are. If you like to live your own life, do your own thing, are creative, date, etc. then get an efficiency apartment in a mixed (children, working people and seniors) community. That way too you can make extra money watching or teaching children and you can ask someone to help move furnuture, carry in groceries, and there will be dependable vehicles around if yours goes down.
I have never been interested in living in that particular community and I was justified until I met one who did and even wanted to take a lost to sell her place because she wanted so much to get the h out of there. She said it was so boring like a dead zone.
I do now, I like it in many ways safety is a biggie. if I were in my 50s or 60s I would not have liked it at all. The down side is when so many start kicking the bucket, which is natural of course, but depressing at times.
I do indeed. And love it. No noise, no door to door sales people, 25 MPH on the roads. And all the amenities, wow. But I can in a very moments be “out among em”.

Quite content in our home at the moment dear.
They are quiet … that’s the nicest part about it.
