Tetras of all sorts are good community fishes, as they usually require groups of 3+ to stay happy. Plus, they are all beautiful, and very unique, and would look good in a 55 gallon tank.
As for algae prevention/control, you could get any sort of pleco, as they are usually hardy and will keep the algae in the tank under control. The only thing that could/would harm a pleco would be high ammonia levels, which shouldn’t be there anyway, or a larger, more aggressive pleco.
For a 55 gallon, really only one or two common pleco’s will do fine. They typically grow as large as their habitat will allow, which they will get quite a healthy size in that size of a tank. I know in my 29 gallon, the largest a pleco has ever gotten was about 3-4 inches long, and there was one caught in a lake that was about 2 feet long, so they range greatly in size depending on their environment.
If you don’t like or don’t want tetras, then I would also say angelfish, hatchets, rainbowfish, or swordtails, or possibly a combination of any or all of those types. Tetras are usually very peaceful, as well as angels and hatchets. Swordtails can be a bit territorial at times, though are calm most of the time, as long as the males are well outnumbered by females. I don’t really have much experience with rainbowfish, so I don’t know their typical behavior that well.
a community fish tank is nice. like the other answer said rainbow fish are beautiful fish. have you ever thought of a butterfly fish? or an elephant nose. a lot of people don’t know about those fish but they are really cool looking the butterfly fish don’t do anything but float at the top as if they are dead, but look super cool. there are also baby whales that are cool. i recommend those or you could always go with guppies but there would be a ton of babies! hatches are cool too. and at my pet store we have these fish called tattoo mollies they are white mollies with love written on the them or hearts or numbers. just a few suggestions.
